In Your Dreams—Dark Dark Dark

Don’t say nothing, no
I can see when you’re lying oh
When you’re alone, you’re so alone

This song is just beautiful; it’s got wonderful layers and depth to it. It’s a good song to be lonely to, without putting too fine a point on it—in fact, despite the bittersweet sort of quality, it might actually make you feel a bit better.

Dead Man (piano)—The Canon Logic

I have the actual version of this song as well, but it’s not half as great as the piano. There’s something haunting about the piano, and the roughness is actually what I find appealing. I still don’t know the lyrics to half of it, but I love what I know, and that’s good enough.

Show You How—the Killers

touch me till i follow in love
i wanna help her
maybe we were better alone
i wanna show you how

This is one of my favorite songs, though I don’t know if I could tell you why. It’s off of Sawdust, and I think the fact that it’s not on any of their actual albums made it a better song. There’s just a lot of feeling in the lyrics and the way he sings them, and although I find it a bit cliche to open a song with an answering machine, something about the idea of singing to an answering machine is romantic enough for me to forgive it.

Maggie Mahoney—Seabird

And if it’s love you think I came here for
Well you’re wrong
Maggie, you’re wrong
‘Cause it’s just one dance I’ve wanted for so long

Seabird is probably best known for their song ‘Rescue’ and all the terrible fan-made videos it has accompanied, which is a shame because ‘Til We See the Shore is a completely perfect and fantastic album. Maggie Mahoney might seem a bit cliche at first, but I like the song for the simple fact that it isn’t a love song. It’s simultaneously more mature and yet childish; it’s affectionate but also cruel.
